Transitioning to Farm Fresh Foods

While changing dog foods can prove to be difficult with some dogs, we have found that most dogs transition wonderfully to Farm Fresh Pet Foods. Often dogs will transition without getting upset stomachs or loose stools. We have many clients that switch to 100% fresh food, and they have great succes. However, if you feel that you would like to transition gradually, we support that approach as well. You know the needs of your dog the best and therefore we leave the method of transitioning foods up to you.

We have had wonderful success with clients switching to our food, and our experience has been that the Chicken / Veggie / Rice recipe is typically the best food for transitioning. Many holistic veterinarians will recommend feeding chicken & rice to help settle upset tummies. With that said you know your dog best, and another recipe might be the best for them.

Fresh Foods | a Healthier Option

While fresh foods are a much healthier option there is the possibility that your dog could go through a detoxification process. Detoxification is a very healthy thing, and the body cannot detoxify very well when it is continually consuming more processed food toxins. Detoxification typically does not occur immediately when switching to fresh foods, it may not even be a noticeable event. The body is complex and has many ways to deal with toxins found in processed foods. Often the toxins that cannot be eliminated from the body will begin to be stored in the fat and the lymph systems. When these toxins are introduced on a daily basis, they accumulate throughout the body. Individual dogs deal with the toxins in different ways: skin issues, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. The body will detoxify itself when it has the necessary vital energy to begin expunging the toxins that have been stored. Fresh foods provide more vital energy to the body via 2 ways. First, fresh foods are easier to digest, so less vital energy is spent on digesting and assimilating the nutrients from food. Second, fresh foods are loaded with all kinds of healthy nutrition so the body gains health & vitality through fresh foods.

All things in nature go through cycles. Dogs who transition beautifully could end up going through a detox weeks later. If the stools get loose or if your dog vomits, it could easily be part of the bodies natural healing process. Dont panic. Fresh foods heal the body, and healing is not always a pretty aspect. Always keep an eye on your dogs stools as it will help you understand what is happening inside your pet. Always consult a veterinarian if stools or vomiting are extreme or persist.

The Farm Fresh Process

The reason fresh food is so much better for your pet than processed foods that come in a bag or a can is the increased digestibility of the natural ingredients. Processing foods under high-temperature & high-pressure denatures proteins and destroys natural vitamins. Processed foods are also largely created by what is possible instead of what is ideal. Our low-temperature gentle cooking process maintains the nutritional integrity of our healthy ingredients and supports increased digestibility. Freezing our foods locks in the wholesome freshness for your pets health and enjoyment.

  1. Low Temperature Delicate Cooking Process - Low temperatures maintain the nutritional integrity of the ingredients.
  2. Proper Timing - Each of our ingredients is combined at the proper time to ensure that the digestibility of the individual ingredients is maximized.
  3. Freezing - Freezing locks in the wholesome freshness and avoids the use of dangerous salts and preservatives.

Farm Fresh Quality & Quality Control

Our commitment to quality is unequaled, and our small-batch, hand-crafted foods are a labor of love. Fresh ingredients offer the best opportunity to inspect quality. We believe that our hand-crafted approach allows for a more thorough inspection of the individual ingredients. All of our veggies are washed by hand, and every cut of meat is inspected as it is included in the recipe.

Large commercial pet food companies do not have the luxury of maintaining our meticulous quality checks. Many of them contract with other companies that actually make the food for them. This is why recalls on one pet food, often lead to multiple brands recalling their foods, all of which can be produced in the same faulty facility. These facilities are often under very tight production guidelines, so they have to keep producing. Some of these companies mean well and attempt to make quality products, but they just cant match our quality control.

At Farm Fresh Pet Foods, if we come across an ingredient where the quality is suspect, we either return it or throw it out. We want healthy & happy pets. Our commitment to providing the best & healthiest dog food is unequaled.

  1. Fresh Ingredients - We start with fresh ingredients where it is easy to examine the quality, unlike processed meats and flours.
  2. Careful inspection - All of our ingredients are inspected, washed, and prepped by hand.
  3. Hand-Crafted Every step from receiving to packaging is done by hand. Personal care & attention at every step.
  4. All-American - All of our meats and most of our veggies (depending upon season) are sourced from the country that makes the best quality, the USA. We never use ingredients that are sourced from China or other suspect countries.

Canine & Feline Superfoods

Superfoods are powerful and delicate. We understand the delicate nature of many superfoods, and we ensure they are not destroyed by our cooking process. Every superfood is added to the recipe at the proper time and temperature. This guarantees that the health-giving qualities of the superfoods remains intact.

The Farm Fresh superfoods help bridge the gap that modern day agriculture has created. Take for instance our Norwegian kelp, it is loaded with over 60 trace minerals, 20 amino acids, and 12 vitamins. Many of these trace minerals have been depleted from our soils due to over farming. The ocean is a sink for minerals, and the pristine waters in Norway grow some amazing & pure kelp that represent one of the most digestible sources of these natural minerals.

Feeding Recommendations

While every dog is an individual and will have different needs, we find that the average dog should consume approximately 2 - 3% of their body weight daily. Our foods are very dense & highly digestible, so your pets consume less, which is much healthier too. We recommend that you feed your dog 2 times a day, once in the morning and once at night.

Puppies will consume on average 4 - 8% of their weight daily in food and should be fed 3-4 times per day. This supports their fast growth cycle and heightened metabolism. We find that it is not necessary to feed puppies a different food than the adults because we start with the best ingredients. When you start with high quality foods, it is good for everyone, both young and old.

Nursing females will need to eat more to support their litter. It is recommended to feed them 4 - 8% of their weight, and should be fed 3 times per day.

Smaller dogs will have a baseline they need and should consume at least ¼ pounds per day.

These are recommendations only. Your dogs needs may differ, and there is no substitute for monitoring the health & weight of your dog on a regular basis. Extremely active dogs may require more while less active dogs may require slightly less.

Canine Weight (in lbs) 5 to 14 15 to 24 25 to 34 35 to 50 51 to 75 76 to 100 100+
Recommending Feeding (in lbs/day) 1/4 to 1/3 1/3 to 1/2 1/2 to 2/3 3/4 to 1 1 to 2 1 1/2 to 3 2+ (2-2.5% of body weight)

Proper Food Handling

Our foods come frozen and should remain frozen until they are ready to be consumed. Food should be frozen or refrigerated at all times. We recommend using the food in the container within 5 days of defrosting. The best method of defrosting is to use your refrigerator. It will take approximately 24 - 48 hours to fully defrost using the fridge depending upon the temperature of your fridge.

Some clients choose to use the microwave to defrost, which is fine as we package in microwave & dishwasher safe containers. The microwave is not our prefered method as it does, to some extent, negate the delicate cooking process we use. Always remember though, using the microwave definitely beats having a hungry puppy, which is why we mention it as an option.

Never refreeze food once it has fully defrosted or allow foods to sit at room temperature for extended periods of time. Follow proper food handling techniques as you would follow for yourself. Exercise common sense when handling any type of fresh food product. Follow proper sanitation methods with your dog's bowl and other items that may come in contact with the food.

Benefits of Fresh Food

Fresh Food contains all the vital nutrition that is required for optimum health. Fresh food offers a higher level of digestibility because it is easier for the digestive organs to assimilate all-natural fresh food. Fresh food supports life. Dead processed foods in a bag or a can cannot fully support life because they are devoid of life. Life begets Life. The opposite is also true.

Imagine eating shredded Beef Jerky and Breakfast Cereal at every meal. Not exactly appetizing but this is basically the equivalent of dry dog foods: powdered meat & flours. Can you imagine how you would feel after months of eating this same thing? Our kidneys hurt just thinking about it.

We all have experience eating canned foods, and very few of us could imagine eating the same canned food day after day. Worse yet, imagine how you might feel if that was the mainstay of your diet. Canned foods have been cooked to death and the life giving nutrients largely destroyed. On top of that, they are largely composed of water or broth that has been solidified by sugary additives and other fillers. Is it any wonder canned foods are synonymous with tooth decay?

It is apparent that while the commercial pet food industry has done a great deed by increasing pet ownership through their “more convenient” and “cheaper” products, that these same products have compromised the health of our best friends. Distributing and storing fresh food is more challenging than the processed foods with unnaturally long shelf-lives.

As a society we are reexamining the way we feed ourselves. More of us are moving towards fresh, local, and high quality foods in record numbers. We are learning that the age old mantra of “you are what you eat” is an absolute certainty. Decades of increasing consumption of processed foods has lead to decades of increases in every degenerative disease. We are a prosperous people but we are plagued by health issues. We are again awakening to the fact that our bodies require fresh foods, real foods, and foods we recognize to function properly. Our pets have the same needs, and more pet parents are examining the way we feed our best friends.
